Published by Fairview Press in 1996, PAINTED DIARIES is the true story of two women, mother Lou and daughter Kim, who began their journey when Lou was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease in 1985. A veteran newspaper reporter, Lou kept a witty diary of her experiences, until her handwriting deteriorated and she forgot how to read and write. Then Kim's artwork took over, exploring the emotional struggle with visual metaphors of her mother's feelings. Lou's diary entries alternate with Kim's writings and paintings, tracing their lives in a small Louisiana town and tracking the daily transformations caused by what Lou called "Al, Mrs. Zheimer's son."
