PAINTED DIARIES: A Mother and Daughter's Experience Through Alzheimer's

$25.00

Sold Out

Published by Fairview Press in 1996, PAINTED DIARIES is the true story of two women, mother Lou and daughter Kim, who began their journey when Lou was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease in 1985. A veteran newspaper reporter, Lou kept a witty diary of her experiences, until her handwriting deteriorated and she forgot how to read and write. Then Kim's artwork took over, exploring the emotional struggle with visual metaphors of her mother's feelings. Lou's diary entries alternate with Kim's writings and paintings, tracing their lives in a small Louisiana town and tracking the daily transformations caused by what Lou called "Al, Mrs. Zheimer's son."

"Who but a caregiver can understand how Alzheimer's is truly a family disease? Who but an artist can plunge into the mysteries of the mind? Who but a journalist can articulate Alzheimer's losses so vividly? Who but a courageous, witty person could take less than a full deck of life's cards and play the game so passionately?"
Keith Horcasitas, MSW, BCSW
Gerontologist/Administrative Social Worker

"Unlike usual clinical accounts, which might frighten the reader, Painted Diaries captures the human side of the changes associated with Alzheimer's disease."
Kenneth Sakauye, MD
Professor of Clinical Psychiatry and Director of Geriatric Psychiatry, LSU Medical School in New Orleans

"Zabbia's book is an engaging voyage of a multitalented mother and daughter team with the gift for detail. Faced with the devastation of Alzheimer's, they did what creative people can do and what others wish they could do: used their writing and their art to cope, understand and convey the enormity of what is happening."
LInda E. Nee, MSW
Social Science Analyst, National Institutes of Health

Description from Merchant:

All materials used to create my original paintings are Artist Grade. I use Golden acrylic and Ampersand panels...all Artist Grade. Even with my art students and peers, I am a fanatic about them using archival materials if they plan to sell their work even if it is just to family and friends. A customer should expect their art to last for centuries and mine will.
